Urban myth or not, there is an amazing tale about the great Michael Jordan. The first time he ever did the move where he dribbled the ball between the defender’s legs and went around him to get the ball again and dunk it, on the way back down the court he whispered to the guy’s ear, “welcome to the big league rookie”. So gangsta!!
Anyways, you’re asking, what the hell does this has to do with Firefox. Well nothing, and everything (I can see your temperature rising). Hit more to chill the fuck out and see why Firefox might have its days numbered.
Ok I’ll keep this short and simple as I can. Firefox rocks and Firefox has really taken a large share of browser usage from the dominant, Microsoft backed, Internet Explorer. However Firefox usage is still a much lower percentage compared to IE . Why you ask? Same way people think Obama is a terrorist; they are being fed the answer before they have time to decide for themselves. Firefox does not make money. They really don’t, at least not enough to be a real browser competitor. To really get to the next level, you have to have your browser bundled with all of these computers that are sold every day. Forget Apple, who doesn’t really like hooking up, but more just tossing off to a picture of itself (ie (pardon the pun) they have Safari). And for pretty much all PC’s companies, they get awesomeingly paid (previously forced) into have IE be there default browser on the computer.
So even though all you kiddies are super advanced and twitter like a maniac through your Firefox plug-in, sorry to break it you but there are “other” people that aren’t as savvy you. But word of mouth and IE 6 becoming the most outdated software of all time helped Firefox grow. But there was a guardian angel lurking in the shadows that helped them along even further. Who you ask? Survey says!! … Google. Google loved Firefox. Well they really hated Microsoft so they naturally slept with their enemy, but they also like Firefox being so damn progressive and all around bas ass. Almost a Newbury Park legend! Well, almost…
So here lies the problem. Firefox can’t make it to the big leagues financially. Yeah you are such a Firefox lover, but would you pay for it? And secondly, Firefox always had Google in its corner when it got it in bar fights.
Well something happened. Google got knocked up (this analogy is getting stranger) and had Google Chrome. You’re a fool if you don’t think Google will have Google Chrome be default on Google mobile operating systems (Android), have special features / functionality with Gmail and other Google applications, and probably have special code/toolkits for web developers through Google Chrome (built in Google analytics feed?!). Google, Google, Google!!!!
So where does Firefox fit into Google’s plan? …. Hahah, it doesn’t! Google Chrome is about to go from beta to Full Live suck it and there are already OEM PC companies lining up that want Chrome as their default browser.
So as I said, Firefox, the new guy to the scene who has so many fans and friends from his local town, all so proud of him going Pro, just got dunked over hard by Chrome. Im not saying Firefox will disappear, but don’t underestimate Google’s power to make you love their products. Their biggest products ever (Google search engine, Google maps, Gmail) came out with good reviews but people were use to using their usual search engine (lycos, aol, altavista) and usual online maps (mapquest) and web mail (hotmail, aol, juno). But as time went on, they got bigger and better and faster.
In conclusion, I say give it 5 years and Google Chrome will easily surpass Firefox in users. You heard it here first.

Awesome write up. I’ve messed with Chrome and I really like it. Haven’t ditched the fox yet bit I’m definitely intrigued by it’s slick interface and the way it handles favorites.
